11 Indigent Students Awarded N1.1 Million UI ASUU Scholarship

In order to support their studies, maintain their attention, and enhance their academic achievement, the University of Ibadan Chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has given 11 poor students scholarships totaling 1.1 million naira.

Out of the more than 100 students that submitted for the scholarship, the selection committee conducted thorough screening and interviews before determining that the eleven candidates were most suited for the 2024–2025 ASUU impoverished students scholarship.

On behalf of the National ASUU, two students received a total of ₦200,000.

The University of Ìbàdàn Branch of ASUU (ASUU-UI) awarded ₦100,000 to five students.

Four students, the Union, received ₦50,000 apiece from branch member Professor Tajudeen Àkànjí to assist the project.

Speaking at the award ceremony, Dr. Adefemi Afolabi, the chairman of the ASUU at the University of Ibadan, said the union felt that the future of bright Nigerian youths shouldn’t be cut short because they can’t pay for their education, even though they face many obstacles like delayed salary payments and the federal government’s slowness in signing a new deal with the union.

ASUU views investing in the future of underprivileged students as a means of fostering in the recipients the values of empathy and support so that they will eventually contribute back to society, according to Dr. Afolabi.

He counseled ASUU members to keep pressing the government to take the necessary action to enhance their well-being and the educational environment at all public colleges.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities presented scholarships to a select group of University of Ìbàdàn students at the Union Secretariat, Olajuwon Olayide Extension, Ajibode.

The recipients include, among others, Bello Ayomide (Medicine and Surgery), Adewumi Mary (Nursing), Omotola Bello (Pharmacy), Moshood Opeyemi (Medicine and Surgery), Adegoke Adeseun Oladayo (Medicine and Surgery), and Alan Success Opeyemi (Economics).
