2027 Coalition: Mass Defections Shake PDP, Other Political Parties Join ADC in Borno

There was a significant defection into the African Democratic Party (ADC) in Borno state as the race for the general elections of 2027 picks up speed. David Mark, a former president of the Nigerian Senate and a stalwart of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was recently appointed as the interim national chairman of the coalition party (ADC).
According to a video that has gone viral on social media, Mattawali Kashim Ibrahim Imam, a former PDP candidate for governor and an APC mainstay in Borno, recently hosted a special dinner at his home in Maiduguri. According to sources, the event included talks with numerous state political figures in order to prepare for his impending joining of the ADC.
Remember that Nigeria’s two key opposition leaders, Mr. Peter Obi, a former presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) and Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, a former presidential contender of the PDP in the general election of 2023, have joined the new political party after recently leaving their respective parties.
Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, the governor of Borno State, has denied rumors in certain online media outlets that he would join five other governors in switching to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the opposition coalition group.
Our correspondent noted that in Borno state, Alh. Idris Mamman Durkwa, a former candidate for governor, and Hon. Sheriff Banki, a youth organizer and stakeholder advocate, among others, have taken the initiative after abandoning the PDP along with thousands of their supporters, families, and associates and setting up camp with the ADC.
As many members of various opposition parties, including the ruling APC, began submitting their resignations to their ward chairmen, it was also learned that Durkwa, a former federal civil servant who became a politician and stormed Maiduguri last week, was at the forefront of the state’s mass defections.
Among them is Hon. Mohammed Umara Kumalia, a former House minority leader who is running for governor and is a PDP senatorial candidate for Borno Central in 2023.
Hon. Babakura Abba Yusuf, 2023 House of Representative candidate in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council, MMC; Hon. Abdulrazaq Ahmed Zanna, 2023 PDP candidate for Bama, Ngala, Kala Balge federal constituency; Alh. Saleh Kida, PDP 2023 Deputy Governorship candidate; Alh. Ali Wurge, former PDP national treasurer; and other House of Representative candidates.
Hon. Fali Wubulari, a former member of the House of Assembly from the Askira Uba LGA state constituency, Hon. Maina Justice, a leader of stakeholders in the Jere local government area, and numerous opposition party candidates for the House of Assembly in each of the 27 local government areas are also listed among the early defectors.
Similarly, all ward and local government party executives, 95% of opposition party stakeholders, and Hon. Isa Lawan Kangar, the Borno North 2023 senatorial candidate, have also defected together with their previous party executives at the state, local government, and ward levels.

The wave of defection into the ADC was a blatant sign of a failed APC under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, according to Hon. Sheriff Banki, a youth mobilizer and stakeholder advocate for the movement (coalition), who discussed the development with our correspondent in Maiduguri.
He also accused the PDP leadership of letting self-serving interests cause the once-greatest African political party to lose support and acceptance.
According to the youth leader, “the Borno PDP, led by Hon. Zanna Gadama, has remained compromised and sold out to the powers that be, forcing its teaming members to quit.”
“Economic hardship and frustration by electorate at the local, state, and national level and the worsening insecurity bedevilling Nigerians” is another reason given by Banki for the decision.
He said: “I am pleased to notify you that the recent mass resignations and defections by prominent members of the ruling APC and other opposition parties in Borno State mark the start of positive developments in the state’s and the nation’s political industries.
“President Tinubu promised Nigerians, particularly the grassroots, the Renewed Hope Agenda. However, in the past two years under the APC-led government, the opposite has occurred, with people no longer sleeping with their eyes closed despite experiencing economic hardships brought on by poor policies and programs.” “Banki said.”
As a result, he encouraged the state’s decent citizens to join the ADC, the only political party committed to governing an inclusive democracy and saving its citizens.
