Senate Accuses CBN of Stalling 30 Trillion Ways and Means Probe

The Senate has accused the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) of hindering its probe into the ₦30 trillion Ways and Means Advance and Anchor Borrowers scheme under former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The Senate Ad-hoc Committee on Ways and Means Advance reported receiving an intermediate report from consultants.
The committee, which was established a year ago by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, alleged that the CBN refused to participate with the probe by disclosing some papers.
Senator Isah Jibrin, the committee’s chairman, stated that the CBN refused to release necessary papers for the probe despite the committee’s efforts.
“The information we have here is consistent with what we have already heard. We handed over the documents to the consultants, and when they provided us with this interim report, we intended to keep it until the final report.
“But we’ve been obligated to make this interim report available to the general public so that they know we’ve informed them of the problem, which is that the Central Bank of Nigeria has continually denied us the documents required to complete this task. That’s the truth.

“I used to visit the CBN and see Bala, the deputy governor. They promised, but nothing came of it. The Clerk had been there several times. Nothing has came of it. The consultants even went directly to CBN because we introduced them and nothing came of it,” he added.
However, Hamisu Abdullahi, Director of Banking Services at the CBN, told Channels TV that the central bank delivered all of the needed documentation.
The committee delivered a strong warning to CBN representatives, underlining the importance of full information about how the money were used to address Nigeria’s economic difficulties.
