Women’s Champions League Final: Arsenal Set to Battle FC Barcelona

After an incredible 4-1 comeback victory over Lyon, which led to a 5-3 aggregate win, Arsenal advanced to the Women’s Champions League final for the first time in nearly 20 years.
Lyon, the runners-up from the previous year, led 2-1 going into the second leg. However, Christiane Endler unintentionally gave Arsenal the equalizer early in the game with an own goal.
Mariona Caldentey then put Arsenal ahead before halftime with a masterfully struck shot. Alessia Russo added a third goal shortly after the interval to increase the lead.

Even after Caitlin Foord’s goal appeared to give Arsenal the lead, Daelle Melchie Dumornay’s goal for Lyon with less than ten minutes left made for a tense finale. The club will now be ready to play Barcelona, the two-time defending champions, on May 24 at Lisbon’s Estadio Jose Alvalade.
Since Arsenal hasn’t advanced to a Champions League final in eighteen years, this accomplishment is very significant.

Although Lyon put up a surprise display during the game, Arsenal’s planning and execution were excellent.

“We were unbelievable in a high-pressure moment against a top opponent,” said coach Renee Slegers, who was proud of her team’s ability to manage pressure-filled scenarios against a strong opponent.

We were really relaxed; I’m thrilled that so much effort went into this game.

“Happy for everybody. Euphoria, such a unique moment. Very joyful, and we must honor these unique occasions while maintaining our humility and preparing for the next one.
