Lagos Government to Enforce Single-Use Plastics Ban from July 1

The ban on single-use plastics will be fully enforced by the Lagos State administration on July 1.

This was revealed in a statement on X on Monday by Tokunbo Wahab, the state’s Environment Commissioner.

In the past 18 months, he said, the state government has enlisted the help of product manufacturers and marketers.

In January 2024, the state government issued a statewide ban on the use of single-use plastics and Styrofoam packaging.
“We reiterated this position during a courtesy visit by TETRA PAK West Africa Limited management, headed by Managing Director Haithem Debbiche,” Wahab stated.

Environmental responsibility is at issue here. Furthermore, we have allowed enough time to conform to international best practices. Lagos cannot accept what is undesirable elsewhere. We must safeguard our future and act morally for the benefit of society as a whole.

Our goal is not to score points. The work is what we are here to do. Similar to how the styrofoam ban was successfully enforced, we will demand accountability and responsibility. If everyone does their part, Lagos can become cleaner and healthier.
