Veteran Singer Mike Ejeagha, ‘Gwo Gwo Gwo’ Crooner, Passes Away

Mike Ejeagha, the renowned Highlife maestro who transformed Igbo folklore and proverbs into engaging music, has died.
It was reported that the “Gwo Gwo Gwo” singer died on Friday, June 6, 2025, at the age of 95.
The musician’s eldest son, Emma Ejeagha, confirmed his death to Vanguard on Friday night.

The musician was claimed to have died at the 32 Garrison Hospital in Enugu, which is owned by the Nigerian Army.

Mike Ejeagha was a dominating voice on Nigerian radio in the 1980s, with his distinct brand of Igbo folk music that spanned generations.

In other news, Nigeria’s former Chief Justice, Justice Mohammed Lawal Uwais, died at the age of 89.

On Friday, June 6, 2025, his family released a statement announcing his death.

Uwais was born on June 12, 1936, in Zaria, Kaduna State. He served as the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) from 1995 to 2006, acquiring a reputation as a protector of judicial independence and a reformer dedicated to protecting the bench’s integrity.

Throughout his tenure, he was generally admired for his fundamental approach to justice, constitutionalism, and democratic governance.

“Inna Lillahi, Wa Inna Ilaihir Rajiun. “With heavy hearts but full of gratitude to Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala, we announce the death of our beloved father, Justice Mohammed Lawal Uwais, former Chief Justice of the Federation,” the family wrote in a brief statement.
