Court of Appeal Dismisses Akpabio’s Motions in Senator Natasha’s Case, Imposes N100,000 Fine

The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, was fined ₦100,000 by the Court of Appeal in Abuja for two motions he filed in a matter involving Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

Following Akpabio’s request to withdraw the motions, a three-member panel of justices, presided over by Justice Hamman Barka, rendered the decision on May 21, 2025.

On Tuesday evening, the certified authentic copy of the decision was acquired.

Following Akpabio’s request to halt the appeal, the motions—filed on March 3 and March 25, 2025, with suit numbers CV/395/M1/2025 and CV/395/M2/2025, respectively—were stricken out.

Senator Neda Imasuen, the chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, and the Senate Clerk of the National Assembly were the respondents in this case.

On the basis of mixed law and fact, Akpabio had petitioned the appellate court for permission to appeal the Federal High Court of Abuja’s ruling (Suit No: FHC/ABJ/CS/384/2025), which was rendered on March 10, 2025.

In addition, he arranges for a stay of proceedings at the lower court while his appeal is being processed, as well as an extension of time to file his notice of appeal.

Nevertheless, his plea to withdraw the applications was allowed by the Court of Appeal, which knocked them out as a result.

“Application seeking to withdraw the two motions dated and filed on 20/3/2025 and 25/3/2025 is granted, and the motions are struck out,” the court said in its decision. ₦100,000 in costs are given to the first respondent.

It was also mandated that the appeal itself, with the filing number CA/ABJ/PRE/ROA/CV/395M/2025, be removed from the court’s records.
