Just In: Tinubu Set to Attend West Africa Economic Summit (WAES)

At the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will be present at the West Africa Economic Summit (WAES) today, June 21, 2025.
According to reports, Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said this in a statement.
The Economic Summit, which is on its second and last day this Saturday, comes before the 67th Ordinary Summit of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which is set for Sunday, June 22, 2025, at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja.

In order to strengthen regional economic integration, President Tinubu launched the first-of-its-kind WAES project in his role as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government. Its main goal is to improve subregional trade and investment cooperation.
Ghana, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Senegal, The Gambia, Benin, Togo, and Guinea-Bissau have all confirmed their attendance at the Economic Summit, which is anticipated to produce tangible results and deliverables to accelerate West Africa’s integration agenda as a vital basis for the region’s long-term peace, security, and prosperity.

Leaders of regional economic organizations, including the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat, the West African Monetary Agency (WAMA), the West African Monetary Institute (WAMI), the ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID), the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA), and the ECOWAS Member States’ Ministers of Finance, Trade, Infrastructure, and Foreign Affairs, are among those attending the summit.

Leaders from the private sector, development partners, and policy specialists are also taking part.

To show his dedication to regional collaboration and inclusive discourse, Tinubu invited Mauritania and the Alliance of Sahelian States to participate.

To send official invitations to heads of state and government throughout the region, the President sent a group of Special Envoys ahead of the Summit.

The group was led by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu and included Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and International Relations, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye.
