Alake Says Lamido Betrayed MKO Abiola’s Mandate

The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, has harshly criticized former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido for remarks he made regarding the June 12, 1993, annulled presidential election. In a recent TV appearance, Lamido said that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was in favor of the election being canceled and that Tinubu’s mother, the late Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji, organised market women to travel to Abuja to show support for the military government. Additionally, he asserted that the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) was established to support the late General Sani Abacha rather than to fight for June 12.
Alake responded by rejecting Lamido’s claims as untrue and a misrepresentation of history. He charged Lamido, the former Social Democratic Party (SDP) secretary, with conspiring to violate the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Abiola’s directive. Alake claims that by agreeing to the establishment of the National Interim Government (NIG) following the annulment of the election, Lamido and the then-SDP chairman sold up Abiola’s victory.

Alake emphasized Tinubu’s contribution to the June 12 contest, pointing out that Tinubu played a key role in ensuring Abiola’s candidacy at the SDP convention in Jos. He disclosed that Tinubu facilitated an agreement that persuaded Atiku Abubakar to resign in favor of Abiola, guaranteeing MKO’s ascent to the position of party flagbearer.
“Lamido’s claims are lies from the pit of hell,” Alake said, characterizing Lamido’s statements as revisionist. He is attempting to hide his own involvement in the June 12 treachery. Additionally, he explained that Tinubu’s mother merely wanted to beg Abacha to reinstate Abiola’s mandate.
