‘Opposition Is Falling Into Tinubu’s Trap’ – Datti Baba-Ahmed Warns Coalition

Datti Baba-Ahmed, a former Labour Party (LP) vice presidential candidate, has cautioned that by forming alliances too quickly without clear agreements and procedures, the opposition coalition may be unintentionally supporting President Bola Tinubu’s political agenda.

In an interview with ARISE NEWS, Baba-Ahmed likened the acts of the current alliance to the 2014 merger that created the All Progressives Congress (APC), particularly the adoption of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the general elections in 2027.

He explained that despite having conversations with coalition leaders, he has remained in the Labour Party and is instead keeping a close eye on events. His strategy is “cautious and strategic,” he says, and he is keeping an eye on the coalition’s “body language” before taking any action.

To put it simply, the opposition is correct in everything it does. I completely believe that we should unite. Both its guiding concepts and its goals are sound. You’re playing someone else’s game, though. Tinubu is the owner of this game.

Given the Labour Party’s substantial influence in the 2023 elections, Datti cautioned against ignoring it.

“The Labour Party is worthy of more than being ignored. We are aware of the hands at play in every party, despite all the reservations. According to our calculations, this party received more than 10 million votes. Regardless of what the courts said, this party defeated the APC and PDP jointly.

Additionally, he emphasized the significance of internal democracy inside the coalition, contending that the caliber of primary elections will serve as a genuine litmus test for the coalition’s legitimacy and level of governing preparedness.

“Good primaries are the first step toward good governance,” he stated.
