BREAKING: Reps Submit Proposal for 31 Additional States

Proposals for the establishment of 31 additional states in the nation’s six geopolitical zones were forwarded to the House of Representatives.
Benjamin Kalu, the deputy speaker and chairman of the House Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, reportedly read the letter during plenary in the Green Chamber.
During plenary, Deputy Speaker Kalu also delivered a letter from the committee that outlined the requirements that must be fulfilled before any petitions for state establishment can be granted.

Five from the North Central region, four from the North East region, five from the North West region, five from the South East region, four from the South South region, and seven from the South West region are among the recommendations, the Committee reports.
The states that have been suggested are: Amana from Adamawa State; Katagum from Bauchi State; Savannah from Borno State; Muri from Taraba State; Okun, Okura, and Confluence to be formed from Kogi State; and Benue Ala and Apa from Benue State.

Others include the states of Gujarat and New Kaduna; Kano’s Tiga and Ari; Kebbi’s Kainji; and the South East’s Etiti, Orashi, Adada, and Orlu Aba.

Additionally, they consist of Ogoja from Cross River, Warri from Delta, Ori and Obolo from Rivers, Torumbe from Ondo, Ibadan from Oyo, Lagoon from Lagos, and Ogun, Oke Ogun/Ijesha from Oyo/Ogun/Osun states, and Ijebu from Ogun.

Kalu stated that a request for the creation of a new state could only be approved by the National Assembly if it was backed by a minimum of three-quarters of the Senate, House of Representatives, House of Assembly, and Local Government Council members as well as the Local Government Council.

Local Government Supporters of the establishment of more local government areas are only reminded that this procedure is governed by Section 8 of the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s Constitution, as amended.

In particular, the results of the referendum’s State Houses of Assembly votes must be sent to the National Assembly in order to satisfy state demands, as stipulated in Section 8.3 of the Constitution.

Resubmitted proposals must strictly adhere to the requirements. Deliver the whole memorandum proposal in three hard copies to the Committee Secretariat in Room H331, House of Representatives, White House, National Assembly Complex, Abuja.

Additionally, electronic subcopies must be provided to info.hccr.gov.nj, the Committee’s email address.

“The Committee would only consider proposals that adhere to the established guidelines and is committed to supporting implementation efforts that are in line with the Constitutional provisions.”
