“Obi Can’t Defeat Tinubu in 2027” – Ohanaeze Labels Move a Political Miscalculation

Ohanaeze Ndigbo, a group inside the Igbo Sociocultural Organization, has called on Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, to drop out of the 2027 contest.
The group said that Obi lacked the political qualifications to depose President Bola Tinubu in a statement released on Sunday by its Deputy President General, Okechukwu Isiguzoro.
According to the report, Obi’s involvement in the 2027 election may turn the Igbo people into political sacrificial lambs in Nigeria and jeopardize further political plans.
The Igbo people are sick of playing opposition politics under Peter Obi’s leadership, Isiguzoro continued, adding that although the submission may seem awkward, it is the truth and Ohanaeze will not back down from the harsh reality.
“The Apex Igbo Sociocultural Organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, considers it both our grave obligation and our deep responsibility to present Mr. Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party Presidential candidate, with a harsh and unsettling reality,” the statement said.
“With the greatest respect and unwavering honesty, we must state that you do not now possess the political perseverance and necessary brutality necessary to defeat seasoned politician and incumbent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the next 2027 elections.
It would be devastating and a serious threat to our collective life if you allowed the Igbo people to be seduced into poorly planned political conflicts under your leadership. In such a situation, we might be used as political pawns, solidifying the reputation that we are Nigeria’s most vulnerable group if you fail in your election campaign.

It is imperative to take a moment to consider the unsettling query: why are the Igbo people in Nigeria so often treated with contempt? Can we really understand how a once esteemed and revered tribe, with notable ancestors like Dr. Francis Akanu Ibiam, Dr. Michael Okpara, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, and Dr. Jaja Wachuku, has been reduced from a prominent position to one of inconsequence, now being categorized as a majority within a minority? This sobering fact requires our full and immediate attention. Our current situation is clearly largely the result of political miscalculations by individuals such as Mr. Peter Obi. The Igbo people are tired of sluggishly following Mr. Obi’s leadership in opposition politics for more than ten years, and we must not be afraid to express this harsh reality.
We would want to make clear our stance in response to the questions posed by three Northern organizations concerning the possible reactivation of the Eastern-Northern Alliance of the First Republic and their worries about Mr. Obi’s ties to secessionist activists in the Southeast. We as Ohanaeze Ndigbo are still amenable to any agreement that would allow Igbos to operate their lawful enterprises without being subjected to discriminatory state laws or unfairly singled out as an endangered community. Our commitment to Nigerian unity is reaffirmed, and we pledge our devotion to the Nigerian Constitution and all constitutionally elected offices, including the presidency currently held by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
“We must be open about our concerns with the second question from Northern leadership over Mr. Peter Obi’s credibility with political authority and his ability to protect and preserve Nigeria’s territorial integrity and dignity as a single nation. Significant doubts are raised about Mr. Obi’s capacity to keep Nigeria united in light of his deeds and inactions. If he becomes president, the foundation of our country may be threatened, and it may ultimately become three separate countries.
“We urge all parties involved to reflect carefully on the consequences of their political decisions as the crucial elections of 2027 draw near. The future of our wonderful country depends on wise choices and a steadfast dedication to its unity.
