Abati Slams Single-Term Pledges as Desperate Move Politicians Can’t Sell to the North

The idea of a one-term government put forth by Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in 2023, and other opposition coalition members will not work, according to Nigerian journalist Reuben Abati.
Abati reportedly revealed this information on Monday, August 4, 2025, during an appearance on the morning broadcast of Arise TV.

A politician that promises a single term is desperate, according to the media personality, because it will not work.

According to the former presidential assistant, the civil war in Nigeria has not yet been resolved, therefore Northerners who are already upset about a Yoruba president are unlikely to accept the prospect of an Igbo president.

“Any politician who approaches you and says, ‘I’m going to serve only one term,’ is displaying desperation,” he remarked. That won’t work. Similarly, this tactic of serving food, carrying plates, and acting like a boy boy at gatherings that event planners should have better planned is also an indication of desperation. It’s ineffective. It can never succeed.

The second difficulty stems from your statement that the North will support the one-term concept. Nope! Due to the ongoing civil conflict in this nation, the North will not. Northerners who already feel wronged by a Yoruba president are unlikely to just change their minds and accept the prospect of an Igbo president, in my opinion. This country is riddled with inconsistencies that have yet to be resolved.
