Atiku, Peter Obi, El-Rufai Coalition Against Tinubu Gains Momentum, Unveils Zonal Leaders

The opposition coalition, which is led by well-known politicians Nasir El-Rufai, Peter Obi, and Atiku Abubakar, is gaining ground as preparations for Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election heat up. Key individuals have reportedly been appointed by the coalition to oversee activities in each of the six geopolitical zones of the nation as part of its attempts to bolster its presence there.
The coalition is anticipated to reveal its selected party platform the following week, according to insiders. The decision to join an existing political party or start a new one is still up for debate. According to reports, potential platforms include the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Social Democratic Party (SDP). Nonetheless, some coalition members contend that forming a new party would help prevent internal conflicts over party structure control, which sometimes arises when two parties merge.

In addition, the alliance has expressed dissatisfaction with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), claiming that it has turned down applications from new political groups looking to register in advance of the 2027 elections.
To supervise zonal coordination, the following individuals have been appointed:
Atiku Abubakar, former vice president, in the northeast
North Central: David Mark, former president of the Senate
Nasir El-Rufai, a former governor of Kaduna State, North West
South East: Peter Obi, a former candidate for president of the Labour Party
Rotimi Amaechi, former Transportation Minister, South South
Rauf Aregbesola, former Interior Minister, South West
These are temporary appointments that need to be finalized by the coalition’s leadership.
Political observers will be closely monitoring how this coalition frames the contest and whether it can pose a serious threat to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as the 2027 election approaches.
