Benue Massacre: Labour Party Laments, Warns ‘Nigeria Can’t Go On Like This’

The recent mass killings in Benue State have been condemned by the Labour Party (LP), which has called for the prompt deployment of security forces to protect communities in danger across North Central Nigeria.
The party warned that Nigeria cannot continue this pattern, characterizing the attacks as “a new wave of senseless violence.”
In a statement issued on Monday, Senator Nenadi Usman, the chairman of the party’s National Caretaker Committee, reportedly demanded a thorough investigation and swift prosecution of the criminals, regardless of their affiliations or status.

Usman expressed deep sorrow at the loss of more than 100 people, including women, children, displaced people, and security forces, as well as the destruction of homes and means of subsistence.
These weren’t just figures. Innocent lives were ruthlessly ended, and they were human.

“Children who should have been protected were killed. Mass graves were used to bury mothers who ought to be caring for their families. She claimed that fathers who attempted to protect their homes were mercilessly killed.

The leader of the Labour Party lamented the ongoing violence, calling the burning of houses, assaults on security personnel, and continuous attacks on displaced people as glaring examples of the government’s failure to protect its citizens.

“Every conscience should be shaken by the carnage in Benue.

It’s a national embarrassment, not just a regional one. The victims’ vulnerability and the attackers’ audacity expose a concerning lack of accountability and leadership,” Usman said.

Usman promoted a coordinated humanitarian operation that includes food supplies, shelter, medical assistance, and psychological support for people impacted in addition to military engagement.

She urged Nigerians to demand concrete measures rather than just “routine condemnations,” pointing out that inaction and indifference only serve to embolden those who carry out violent crimes.

As a mother, I share with the sorrow of the bereaved families.

“Your cries are heard, widowed women, orphaned children, and destroyed communities. Your suffering is felt across the country, and your call for justice cannot be disregarded,” she continued.

She reiterated the Labour Party’s dedication to promoting laws that put everyone’s safety and dignity first, especially those living in rural and conflict-affected areas.

Usman bemoaned, “Nigeria cannot continue like this.”
