Nigeria Makes History with First U-19 Women’s Cricket World Cup Win

After a delayed debut, Nigeria’s Junior Female Yellow Greens defeated test-playing New Zealand by two runs on Monday to finally get a taste of the action at the 2025 ICC U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup in Malaysia.

The game was delayed by Sarawak’s rain, just as it was against Samoa on Saturday, but the Nigerian team’s brilliance was not to be dampened once more, as the match started more than two hours later than planned and with less overs.

By choosing to field first, New Zealand forced the Nigerian hitters into the crease.

At the Women’s World Cup, Nigeria’s captain, Lucky Piety, scored the country’s maiden six in a steady innings as the Junior Yellow Greens finished with 65 runs at a cost of six wickets in 13 overs.

Sarah Bakhita’s side knew that their bowling had to join the celebration, so they played it slow and steady in the second innings before dismissing the fourth-ranked country for 63 runs at a cost of six wickets.
