At the 17th Headies Awards, which took place on Sunday, April 27, at the Landmark Event Centre in Lagos, Omowunmi, the widow of the late Nigerian musician Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, better known by his stage name Mohbad, brought the audience to tears with an emotive tribute.
Mohbad received two significant prizes posthumously: the Viewer’s Choice award for his work with Chike on the smash song “Egwu” and Best Street Music (Street-hop Artiste) of the Year. In her moving statement, Omowunmi reflected on her husband’s lasting impact as she accepted the honor on his behalf. She revealed that she does not consider Mohbad to be her “late husband” because, in her opinion, he is still alive, particularly through their small son Liam.

She spoke passionately about her conviction that Liam will eventually realize and value the significant influence Mohbad had on the world, even though he is still too young to completely comprehend the scope of his father’s legacy.
“I want to express my gratitude for this award on behalf of myself, my son Liam, my husband’s younger brother Adura, and the entire Imonelization family,” she added.
“Mohbad isn’t here with us anymore, but he lives on,” she continued. He lives on eternally, especially through our son Liam, so I don’t like to refer of him as my late spouse. I am certain that he will eventually understand the extent of his father’s greatness, even though he may not yet be able to do so. Many thanks, Headies. I appreciate you bringing my hubby to light. I appreciate you honoring his legacy and memories. For me, his kid, and the entire Imonelization, it holds immense significance.
The enduring impact of Mohbad’s music and the deep affection that still surrounds his legacy were highlighted by Omowunmi’s moving homage.
