Elisha Abbo Backs ADC Coalition, Calls It a ‘Marriage of Convenience’ for National Good

The adoption of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), according to former Adamawa Senator Elisha Abbo, represents the reality of contemporary Nigerian politics.
On Wednesday in Abuja, the ADC was formally introduced as the platform for a unified opposition coalition. Its goal is to bring together different political interests in an effort to overthrow the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
One of the main players in the recently revealed opposition alliance, Abbo, told Vanguard that the ADC’s adoption was a marriage of convenience.

Politics, which includes personal, regional, and national interests, is what this group of politicians is all about. Although these disparate interests are inextricably linked, he stated that they will be utilized.
The coalition would choose candidates for all political offices, including the presidency, according to democratic norms, Abbo stated.

“In the end, democratic principles will be used to choose and elect candidates for every job. Keep in mind that this is merely a temporary leadership structure. He clarified that the congresses would be followed by a national convention when the party’s national executives would be chosen.

Concerns over ideological divisions within the coalition were dismissed by Abbo as baseless, citing the APC’s 2013 founding as an example.

“This has occurred in Africa before. A group of strangers have bonded over shared national interests. Different political and personal interests were combined to form the APC, the party currently in power. Together, members of the PDP, ANPP, CPC, and ACN formed the APC. Convenience also led to that marriage, which led them to the Villa.

The reason it’s a convenience marriage is that any successful marriage needs to be convenient. There can be no marriage without convenience. Thus, while it is a marriage of convenience, it is also motivated by national interest, he stated.
