Enugu Labour Party Dumps Abure, Rallies Behind Obi’s Coalition Plan

The Labour Party (LP) chapter in Enugu has officially proclaimed its support for the African Democratic Congress (ADC)-led opposition alliance.
The development comes amid internal difficulties within the LP as a section led by Julius Abure threatens to censure Peter Obi, the party’s presidential candidate in 2023, for his role in the new opposition coalition.
In a letter dated July 3, 2025, and signed by Kingsley Ugwu, LP’s acting state chairman, the party stated that it is joining the coalition to build a better Nigeria.

“We are pleased to announce that Labour Party Enugu State has officially embraced the coalition to contribute to the movement for achieving a better Nigeria, working together with our principal, Peter Obi,” according to the letter.
Ugwu stated that the party’s decision to join the coalition stems from its desire for unity and collaboration in the pursuit of national development.
“As part of this effort, we are excited to announce that we can now begin advertising the ADC agenda across all 160 wards in Enugu State,” the politician said.
He stated that the coalition’s goal is to promote a common vision for a better Nigeria and encourage community engagement on topics that are important to residents.
“We believe that by working together, we can build a brighter future for our state and our nation,” Ugwu told me.
On Wednesday, Obi and numerous major Nigerian political personalities were seen during the inauguration of ADC as the platform of the opposition alliance in Abuja.
Among those present were John Oyegun, former national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC); Atiku Abubakar, former vice-president; Rauf Aregbesola, former minister of interior; Aminu Tambuwal, former governor of Sokoto; and former Senate President David Mark, who is now the ADC’s interim national chairman.
