Foreign Airlines Must Enforce Currency Declarations Above $10,000 – NCAA

Regarding the Currency Declaration Directive (Ref: NCAA/CPD/ABV/298), which was issued on Tuesday by Michael Achimugu, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, the directive is consistent with Nigeria’s continuous endeavors to fortify its Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) framework in compliance with international standards and commitments.

“All international airlines that operate inbound flights to Nigeria are hereby reminded by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to adhere strictly to the directive’s provisions regarding the requirements for inbound passengers to declare their currency.”

Regarding Nigeria’s continuous endeavors to fortify its Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) structure, in compliance with global norms and commitments, the NCAA restates the subsequent guidelines for all international airlines: Make announcements before takeoff or in flight reminding travelers that they are required by law to declare any cash or Bearer Negotiable Instruments (BNI) worth more than $10,000 USD or its equivalent when they arrive in Nigeria. Passengers can fill out currency declaration forms on board before landing.

According on reports the NCAA has received, certain airlines have yet to comply with this directive, the press statement added.

The collaboration of all foreign airlines that operate in Nigeria is essential to assisting the nation’s endeavors to conform to international financial norms.

In light of this, the Authority stresses how crucial it is that this order be fully implemented, especially with regard to inbound passenger disclosures.
