FG to ADC: You’re Completely Misinformed on Appointment Process

Regarding President Bola Tinubu’s delays in designating ambassadors for the nation, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has been accused by the federal government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, of generating unfounded political concerns.
In a statement, Alkasim Abdulkadir, the Special Assistant on Media and Communications Strategy to Yusuf Tuggar, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, stated that the government would not react hastily to ambassadorial nominations due to pressure from politically ignorant parties.
The statement was reportedly made in response to the ADC’s earlier criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s administration for failing to designate ambassadors to Nigeria’s overseas missions.

In a statement released on Sunday, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC’s Interim National Publicity Secretary, called the development “embarrassing.”

But according to the Foreign Affairs Ministry, Nigeria’s diplomatic posts are still fully functional and successfully represented by seasoned foreign service officials, including seasoned chargés d’affaires, despite the ADC’s assertions to the contrary.

The statement went on to say that the ADC is ignorant about Nigeria’s foreign policy and that ambassadors will not be appointed in a hurry for partisan reasons.

Regarding Nigeria’s foreign representation and the speed at which ambassadors are appointed under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs vehemently disputes the recent ADC statement.

“According to the Ministry, the ADC’s statements are alarmist, politically driven, and essentially inaccurate regarding the practicalities of international diplomacy,” the statement said.

President Tinubu is working to guarantee that future postings are motivated by merit, competence, national interest, and strategic alignment in accordance with his Renewed Hope Agenda, the Ministry noted, adding that ambassadorial appointments are a sovereign prerogative.

According to the report, Nigeria’s active worldwide presence is demonstrated by its recent diplomatic initiatives under the direction of Minister of Foreign Affairs Yusuf Maitama Tuggar and its involvement in organizations like BRICS, the African Union, and ECOWAS.

The Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs’ recent high-level engagements give evidence of Nigeria’s strong external ties.

The appointment of ambassadors is a sovereign function and should not be hurried for partisanship or political expediency. As part of his Renewed Hope Agenda, President Tinubu is dedicated to changing the foreign service structure so that future postings are motivated by competence, national interest, merit, and strategic alignment rather than expediency or favoritism.

“Nigeria is not silent or uninvolved in global affairs,” the statement continued.

The Ministry also dismissed criticism of Nigeria’s handling of the alleged U.S. plan to send Venezuelan prisoners to Nigeria and other African nations.

While the Foreign Affairs Ministry insisted that such communication must be transparent and is a characteristic of modern diplomacy, it was reminded that the ADC had branded Tuggar’s reaction in a TV interview “diplomatically reckless.”

It advised the ADC to refrain from emphasizing diplomatic matters in order to gain political influence.

Nigeria responded with clarity, morality, and respect for its sovereign rights. The idea that the Foreign Minister’s public pronouncement of Nigeria’s stance was a diplomatic blunder ignores the realities of contemporary diplomacy, where responsible communication and transparency are becoming more and more important.

“The remarks made by the ADC demonstrate political opportunism and a lack of knowledge about foreign policy procedures. Politicians should not use diplomacy as a means of attack. “Sensationalism and domestic political point-scoring are too valuable to damage Nigeria’s international reputation,” the Ministry said.
