Lagos Assembly Set to Investigate Obasa Over Fraud Claims Upon Resumption

In response to claims of financial mismanagement and fraud, the Lagos State House of Assembly has announced that it will look into former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa.

Speaking to The Punch, House spokesperson Olukayode Ogundipe revealed the information.

He claims that as soon as Obasa returns to his responsibilities at the Assembly, the investigation will begin.

Ogundipe stated, “The other accusations against him will be addressed once he is physically present.”

He has also been spending varying sums of money, according to various reports we’ve heard. When he is sitting with us, we will take action on the ones we have, even if we were unsure how they obtained the record of those.

The spokesperson for the Assembly responded, “That will be expatiated when he’s on the ground, probably a committee will be set up to look into it or probably it will also be looked at by the leadership of the House,” when asked if the Assembly would petition the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to investigate the former Speaker.

The processes will be strictly adhered to in terms of those formalities. Therefore, you can be confident that when the time comes, the House will respond to that.

On January 13, Obasa was impeached by nearly two-thirds of the 40-member legislature due to allegations of financial offenses and malfeasance.

But Obasa has refuted these accusations, saying he is still the legitimate Speaker and that his dismissal was improper.

According to Ogundipe, the Assembly’s spokesperson, Obasa’s expulsion was legal and compliant with the constitution.

When Obasa returns to his duties, the House will decide what to do next, including whether to conduct an investigation, he said.

According to Ogundipe, “I want to state that the removal of the former Speaker, Rt Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, was a constitutional procedure and that he is still and will continue to be one of us.”

“As previously stated, the constitution is quite explicit regarding the mechanism we used to remove him and the procedures we used to bring him in if we wanted to alter the guard. We are aware of what we observed, and we planned to change the guard, which is precisely what we did. The procedure was properly followed.
