Labour Party Faction Issues 48‑Hour Ultimatum to Peter Obi to Resign

Following Peter Obi’s alliance with a newly formed opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Julius Abure-led section of the Labour Party (LP), which is running for president in the 2023 general elections, has given him a 48-hour ultimatum to leave the party.
Obi was one of the leading political leaders who convened on Wednesday to choose the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as the coalition party to overthrow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027, according to prior reports.
Obiora Ifoh, the national publicity secretary for the Abure-led faction, cautioned in a statement signed and released in Abuja on Thursday that Obi’s backing of the coalition is in direct opposition to the faction’s stance, which has distanced itself from the alliance and labeled its members “frustrated politicians” and “power mongers.”

According to the statement, the Labour Party has repeatedly said that it is not a member of the coalition.

“Therefore, any member of our party who is a part of the coalition has 48 hours to formally exit the party.”

“Desperate Politicians Can’t Birth a New Nigeria” – Ifoh Ifoh did not mince words when criticizing the coalition, cautioning Nigerians that the frequently used catchphrase of a “new Nigeria” was merely a front given the individuals behind it.

He claimed, “We are aware of multiple meetings that took place at night between Peter Obi and some of our members, urging them to join him in his new party.”

“We also know that several of them have declined to defect alongside him.”

According to the LP chieftain, the alliance is made up of those who have previously misled Nigeria, and he accused them of utilizing the platform to “relaunch themselves into the circle of power.”

“Young people who are fed up with the status quo make up nearly 70% of Nigeria’s population,” he said.

“What we are witnessing in the coalition does not represent the new Nigeria that the youths envision.”

The Labour Party emphasized that members cannot be part of two political platforms at the same time and warned that it will no longer accept dual loyalties.

“Those with dual agendas and dishonest personalities are not welcome in the Labour Party,” Ifoh said.

“They claim to be in the Labour Party in the morning, but they are in coalition in the evening.”

He exhorted all party members to stick with the system and get ready for next elections under the Labour Party’s name.

Peter Obi, meantime, has reiterated his dedication to the opposition party alliance, calling it a vital platform for Nigeria’s 2027 rescue.

“No one group can change Nigeria alone,” the former governor of Anambra State stated in a message uploaded on his official 𝕏 feed. Even when those bridges are uncomfortable, we must construct bridges rather than barriers in order to destroy the systems that trap our people in poverty and insecurity.

He disclosed that the African Democratic Congress (ADC), with Senator David Mark serving as National Chairman and Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola as Secretary, has been formally accepted by the alliance as its platform for the 2027 elections.

Obi continued, “We are willing to make sacrifices and cooperate in order to guarantee that Nigeria has a capable, capable, and caring leadership that will put the welfare of Nigerians first and prioritize the country’s future.”
