Nigeria Mourns: Ex-President Buhari Passes Away

Muhammadu Buhari, the former president, has passed away.
According to reports, on Sunday, July 13, 2025, his former aide Bashir Ahmad posted via X to proclaim the former president’s passing.
He wrote, “The former president Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, passed away this afternoon in a London clinic, according to the former president’s family.”

In Aljannatul Firdaus, may Allah accept him. Amin.

President Buhari, who led Nigeria as its military leader from 1983 to 1985 before taking office as its civilian president from 2015 to 2023, was well-known for his anti-corruption policies and attempts to stabilize the economy.

The family is anticipated to provide more information about the funeral plans in compliance with Islamic customs.

Garba Shehu, the former Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to former President Muhammadu Buhari, has disclosed that throughout his time in office, his former principal cut important government spending and turned down numerous expensive presents.

In his recently published memoir, “According to the President: Lessons from a Presidential Spokesperson’s Experience,” which was introduced in Abuja on Tuesday, Shehu described a number of occasions in which Buhari declined ostentatious benefits, such as a fleet of armored cars worth ₦400 million and a wristwatch adorned with diamonds.

Shehu remembered a 2015 meeting in which Buhari spoke to senior executives of a large construction firm that worked on federal projects. He claimed that the Riot Act was read by the former president in reference to bloated contracts and kickbacks.

“On November 6, 2015, a delegation of the Board of Directors of the giant construction company that handles government contracts like roads, railways, bridges, and facilities management visited me at the State House, giving me the opportunity to clearly explain this message to senior government officials and the business community,” he said.

“We have been informed that percentage cuts, 10 percent or more, are built into your contracts, to be shared among government leaders and civil servants,” he said to the delegation led by (name withheld), a former Group Chair of Shell Nigeria. This has to end. Kickbacks will not be tolerated.

“We have also been informed that you, as handlers of major contracts, build homes for government leaders,” Buhari continued, according to Shehu. For the recipients, you purchase and maintain pricey autos.
