Nigerians Struggle With Subsidy Removal Due to Dependency on Easy Money – Orji Kalu

Orji Uzor Kalu, the senator for Abia North, asserted that because Nigerians are not accustomed to working hard, they are responding poorly to President Bola Tinubu’s economic initiatives.
On Tuesday, May 27, 2025, he made this statement to reporters at the National Assembly complex.
Recognizing the nation’s present economic struggles, he asked people to have patience and insisted that the advantages of the continuing changes will soon become apparent.
“Allow me to tell you the truth. I am not a politician; I am a businessman. Only a handful of things are not taking place. It’s possible that Mr. President’s policies won’t be working in the long run. People continue to suffer. Indeed, I concur with that. However, rather than at the lesser level, it has begun to seep in at the macro level, or the top level.

“I hope that the President’s policies will be implemented and Nigerians will recognize his efforts over the next two to three years,” he stated.
Kalu called Tinubu’s audacious actions—such as eliminating gasoline subsidies and bringing foreign exchange rates under one roof—unprecedented since Nigeria gained its independence.
This is the first President to halt the fuel subsidy since 1960, and I have the evidence. The dollar rates were combined for the first time by this president. Nigerians are not accustomed to working hard, which is why we are suffering. We are accustomed to receiving quick cash.
In the past, he claimed, “people would sit in their homes, use their phones, get dollars, and sell at very high rates.”
He also criticized the culture of undeserved wealth, including activities like profiting through government documents and tank farms and currency speculation.
“People use their tank farms, sit at home, gather papers, and earn money.” “Do it the right way if you are ready to make money,” this president once stated. “Leave it if you’re not ready,” he continued.
