NLC to Stage Protest Over Dismissal of Workers at KEDC

The termination of 900 employees of the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (KEDC) has been described by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) as the pinnacle of injustice and lawlessness.
As a result, the NLC called for the quick and complete reinstatement of all impacted employees, threatening to stage more protests if the distribution company did not comply.It pointed out that such a sack had no rationale.

Benson Upah, the NLC’s Head of Information and Public Affairs, released a statement on Thursday outlining the congress’s stance.Abdullahi Abdulazeez, Kaduna Electric’s Head of Corporate Affairs, issued a statement on Tuesday in which the business denied any rumors or false information pertaining to the recent industrial action and insisted that it was part of a personnel reorganization program.

According to the statement, Kaduna Electric’s management has started a comprehensive transformation process with the goal of guaranteeing the long-term sustainability of the business.

The corporation affirmed that “services no longer required” notifications were sent only to workers of the Independent System Operator (ISO), a branch of the Transmission corporation of Nigeria (TCN), contrary to claims by labor unions about the effect on 900 workers.
The NLC also urged all of its affiliates in Kaduna State to show sympathy with the workers by participating in the current demonstration.

Titled “Come Off Your High Horse,” the statement denounced KEDC’s action as a breach of redundancy and due process regulations.

“Despite repeated acts of provocation by KEDC’s management, we commend the protesting workers of Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company for conducting their strike action peacefully,” the statement said.

The protest that the impacted workers have already started was referred to by the NLC as a “heroic struggle against illegality and injustice.”

“We implore the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company’s management to soften its tough posture and have a constructive conversation. Restoring critical services and promoting industrial peace are two benefits of unconditionally rehiring the fired employees, the statement continued.

If the KEDC doesn’t change its mind, the NLC threatened to implement harsher penalties.

“First and foremost, we are urging all of our affiliates in Kaduna State to participate in the demonstration in solidarity,” the NLC announced.

In the meantime, the KEDC has denied rumors that 900 workers were fired, which have been extensively disseminated.
