Police Investigate Palace Clash Between Sanusi and Bayero Supporters

The Kano State Police Command has formed a panel to investigate the violent conflict between followers of the ousted 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, and those loyal to the reinstalled 16th Emir, Muhammadu Sanusi II, in Kano’s Kofar-Kudu district.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, confirmed the development to Punch on Monday, saying that the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, has ordered a full-scale investigation into the incident.

“The CP, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, has set up a panel to investigate the altercation,” Haruna said in a WhatsApp message to Punch.

Although facts are vague, the encounter apparently occurred on Sunday when Emir Bayero’s convoy attempted to travel via the Kofar-Kudu axis on its way from his Mandawari home to the Nassarawa mini-palace.

Eyewitnesses who talked with the platform said that Bayero’s entourage faced intense resistance from suspected Emir Sanusi followers, resulting in property damage and palace guard casualties.

A local who observed the confrontation claimed that hoodlums vandalized the Gidan Rumfa Palace’s main gate, injured palace guards, and wrecked police vehicles.

“The police’s timely and prompt response prevented the incident from degenerating into a full-blown bloody clash,” the eyewitness added, saying that cops quickly sprayed tear gas to disperse the opposing factions.

The altercation is the latest in a long-running struggle for royal power, which began in May 2024 when the Kano State Government deposed Emir Bayero and reinstated Emir Sanusi II.

Since then, the two monarchs have been operating from separate palaces, Sanusi in the Gidan Rumfa main palace and Bayero in the Nassarawa mini-palace, as court fights and political tensions continue to loom over the emirate.
