Shell Reaffirms Dedication to Meaningful Community Investments

With its co-venture partners, Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company Ltd. (SNEPCo) has stated that it will keep implementing investments that have an impact.
As part of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd.’s (NNPC) and Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company Ltd.’s (SNEPCo) Vision First project, SNEPCo Managing Director Ronald Adams recently spoke at an outreach event held in Lagos.
In the outreach, over 2,000 people sought medical attention, and there have been reports of sights restored.
It’s been a few years since I was able to see my lovely wife clearly, but now I can see her once more. Following surgery for a cataract in his eyes, Ademola Alabi Joshua, a recipient, declared, “I am really happy.”
When I arrived, my first eye was worked on, and I found that I could see quite well the second day. I made the decision to have the second eye performed on, and today I found that my sight had returned to normal. I really appreciate it.
Mrs. Taiwo Onogu, another beneficiary, claimed that for the eye surgery that was ultimately performed at the outreach for free, she was charged N1.4 million.
Following the launch of the Vision First initiative in 2022, this was Lagos’ fourth outreach, taking place over five days in the Mushin Local Council Development Area. Of the 245 eye procedures the medical team did, 198 were for cataracts and 47 were for pterygium, among other conditions. 1,863 patients were given medication by the pharmacy, while 1,992 more received laboratory tests. General consultations were given to almost 1,652 people.

Since 2022, the initiative has distributed more than 2,000 pairs of spectacles, performed more than 400 eye procedures, and reached over 6,000 people, according to the most recent milestones.
On the program’s impact, SNEPCo Managing Director Ronald Adams said: “We’re pleased at the testimonies from Mushin, which were the same positive feedback from the three earlier sessions. Vision is an important part of life.” As a fundamental component of our operations since we introduced deep-water oil production at Bonga in 2005, we will continue to carry out significant social initiatives with the help of NNPC and our co-venture partners.
With the National Eye Health Policy 2019 study stating that blindness in Nigeria is preventable in three out of four cases, the Vision First project seeks to reduce avoidable visual impairment through early diagnosis and treatment.
