Only two years remain until Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election, and political strategists are already setting themselves up for a chance to hold the nation’s top job.
New alliances and changes are occurring within the 19 registered political parties, and certain political players are looking into special purpose vehicles in order to fulfill their goals of taking control of Aso Rock, Nigeria’s seat of authority in Abuja.
Seven presidential candidates have already lined up under the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), which has become a major player in the political drama.
In an interview with Channels Television’s socio-political program Inside Sources with Laolu Akande, the party’s National Secretary, Olu Agunloye, disclosed this.
There are eight candidates for president, but there may be ten. During the interview, former Steel Minister Agunloye stated, “We have seven of them on our platform.”
Agunloye stated that the SDP would make every effort to keep these candidates, even though he would not name them. He also said, “We can’t afford to lose any of the interested politicians to other parties.”
Agunloye also disclosed that supporters of Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s (LP) 2023 presidential candidate, had proposed to the SDP that they draft the party’s program in the event that Obi decides to join.

“Obi’s people approached us and asked if we would take him if he came. Agunloye clarified, “Of course, we told them: ‘Yes.'” Although Obi has not yet made his official intention known, his supporters have approached the SDP.
“Some of them are with us saying that they are preparing the ground but you have to join SDP,” Agunloye clarified. We cannot welcome you if you are a member of the Labour Party and notify us that Obi is coming without first joining us.
Despite the fact that there is still speculation about Obi possibly switching to the SDP, Agunloye admitted that the party is ready for anything that might happen.
However, Obi might wish to attend or he might not have any plans to. People engage in all of this, but our goal is to do well on our platform, Agunloye confirmed.
