Slain Final-Year Student Emmanuella Ahenjir Laid to Rest in Benue

The grave of Emmanuella Ahenjir, a 23-year-old Federal University Wukari final-year student who was allegedly shot and murdered by a police officer during a stop-and-search operation in Makurdi, has been held in her birthplace in Benue State’s Ushongo Local Government Area.

Recall that on May 16, 2025, Ahenjir was slain in Makurdi, close to the Wurukum junction, when police officers allegedly opened fire on the car she was riding in.

Witnesses claimed that when the driver did not quickly obey their stop signal, the officers opened fire on the vehicle.

Emmanuella was hit by a bullet and died at a nearby hospital from her wounds.

Her passing caused indignation throughout the state and beyond, which led to nonviolent demonstrations in Makurdi.

Concerned citizens and civil society organizations marched through the streets, demanding an end to police brutality and justice for the student who was killed.

During the demonstrations, protesters held placards with slogans like “End Police Brutality Now” and “Justice for Emmanuella,” calling on authorities to hold the implicated police accountable.

Since then, the Benue State Police Command has opened an inquiry into the event and promised that anyone found guilty will be held accountable.
