Supreme Court: What INEC Told Peter Obi, Alex Otti, and Others About Labour Party Revealed

In light of the Labour Party’s (LP) leadership contest, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has pledged to uphold impartiality and openness in the performance of its mandate.
When leaders of the Labour Party (LP) visited INEC’s headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday, they urged the electoral body to formally acknowledge Senator Esther Nenadi Usman as the party’s lawful chairman. Sam Olumekun, INEC’s acting chairman, made this position known.
Olumekun and other National Commissioners welcomed the LP delegation, which was led by Abia State Governor Alex Otti and the party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi.

As previously reported, the leaders of the Labour Party made their case, requesting that INEC formally recognize Usman’s leadership in light of the recent Supreme Court decision.
Governor Otti formally handed a Certified True Copy of the recent Supreme Court ruling regarding the party’s leadership, according to an INEC statement following the meeting.
According to the statement, all parties had fruitful conversations aimed at reaffirming democratic principles.
“To address important developments within the party, a high-level delegation of the Labour Party (LP), led by Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti, visited the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday.
“A Certified True Copy of the latest Supreme Court ruling regarding the party’s leadership was formally presented by Governor Otti during the visit. He stated that the purpose of the meeting was to promote institutional alignment, mutual understanding, and clarity with regard to the LP’s current structure.
Mr. Sam Olumekun, INEC’s Acting Chairman, and other National Commissioners welcomed the team. Discussions between the two sides focused on strengthening cooperation and reaffirming democratic principles.
“Mr. Olumekun reiterated the Commission’s steadfast dedication to impartiality, openness, and the rule of law in the performance of its constitutional duties.”
