BREAKING: Tension in Ondo as Protests Brew Over Gani Mohammed’s Detention

Mass Protest Looms in Ondo Over Gani Mohammed’s Detention
Tension is rising in Ondo State as youths have threatened mass protests following the arrest and detention of Gani Mohammed, the immediate past Special Adviser on Special Duties to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa. His arrest was allegedly ordered by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

The Coalition for Progressive Youth in Akokoland issued the protest warning in a statement released on Friday. The coalition’s president, Obanla Oluwaseyi Victor, signed the statement, which was made available to journalists in Akure.

The group issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the Nigeria Police Force, demanding the immediate release of Gani Mohammed from detention at the Force Headquarters in Abuja. They warned that failure to comply would lead to large-scale demonstrations across Ondo State.

Youths Demand Immediate Release
According to the statement, Mohammed was arrested late Monday night at his Alagbaka, Akure residence without any prior invitation or an arrest warrant. The coalition condemned the action, stating that it violated due process and fundamental human rights.

“Despite interventions from well-meaning Nigerians calling for his release, the Nigeria Police Force has remained unyielding. It is clear they are acting out a script allegedly orchestrated by Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo,” the statement read.

The group urged the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to intervene and ensure Mohammed’s immediate release. They stressed that his continued detention without bail would provoke mass protests, particularly among youths in Akokoland.

Condemnation of Political Intimidation
Expressing their outrage, the youths criticized the police for being used as a tool of oppression instead of upholding justice.

“It is disheartening that an institution meant to protect citizens is now being weaponized to harass innocent individuals. The involvement of Minister Tunji-Ojo in this matter is unnecessary and shows a blatant disregard for human rights,” the coalition stated.

They accused the minister of abusing his position and warned that power is temporary. “Tunji-Ojo should remember that power is transient. He will not remain in office forever, and whatever goes around comes around,” they said.

Call for Justice and Fairness
The coalition urged the IGP to take immediate action to prevent the situation from escalating. They insisted that Mohammed’s detention was politically motivated and demanded that the rule of law be upheld.

“The continued detention of Comrade Gani Mohammed is a direct insult to the people of Akoko. Those orchestrating this unlawful act should rethink their actions before the situation spirals out of control,” the statement continued.

They called on the police leadership to resist external influence and ensure justice is served. “We appeal to the IGP not to remain silent. The unlawful detention of Comrade Gani Mohammed is unacceptable, and we will not hesitate to take action if he is not released,” they concluded.

As tension builds, all eyes are now on the authorities to see how they will handle the situation.
