Court Hands Prison Terms to Two Men Posing as EFCC Officials

Two men in Kano State were convicted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for posing as its representatives.
Following their arraignment on a single count of impersonation, the two convicted individuals, Buhari Abdullahi and Umar Usman, were reportedly sentenced by Kano State High Court Justice Nasiru Saminu on Friday.
The two used counterfeit identity cards to trick unwary members of the public in May 2025 by posing as EFCC investigators, according to the EFCC’s Kano Zonal Directorate.

“That you, Buhari Abdullahi and Umar Mukhtar Usman, sometime in May 2025 at Kano within the jurisdiction of this honorable court, falsely impersonated as investigators of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), where you used a false identity card and paraded yourselves as staff of EFCC, thereby committing an offense contrary to and punishable under Section 132 of the Penal Code Law,” was part of the charge.

After being told the accusation in court, both defendants entered guilty pleas.

In his presentation of the case’s facts, prosecuting attorney Idris I. Haruna urged the court to rule in favor of their plea.

Following their conviction, Justice Saminu sentenced them to six months in prison each, with the possibility of a ₦50,000 fine.

The men who were caught while pretending to be its agents were confirmed by the anti-graft agency. The public was cautioned by the EFCC to be wary of scammers impersonating commission officials.

The conviction supports the EFCC’s continuous efforts to prevent impersonators from damaging the agency’s reputation and taking advantage of people through deceptive means.
