Sowore Pleads Innocent to Cybercrime Charges for “Illegal IGP” Comment

Omoyele Sowore, an activist and former presidential candidate, has disputed the cybercrime allegations brought against him in the Federal High Court in Abuja by Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun.
The accusations are related to Sowore’s public remarks on his verified X account, in which he called Egbetokun a “illegal IGP.”

Sowore is charged in case FCH/ABJ/23/25 with purposefully exploiting his verified X account to transmit messages that called Kayode Egbetokun, the Inspector General of Police, an “illegal IGP.”

The police claim that these claims were untrue and meant to incite chaos in order to disturb the quiet and undermine their police force’s authority.

When Sowore was read the accusations at roughly 10:00 am on Wednesday, he entered a not-guilty plea before Justice Abdullah Liman at the FCT High Court.

His supporters demonstrated against the arraignment outside the court.

“Police are here to scare demonstrators.” Abuja is on fire in the meantime. Instead than being sent to areas where crime is most prevalent, look at them collected here.

This demonstrates how serious this government and Kayode Egbetokun, the unlawful Inspector General of Police, are. “He would send his men to combat crime, not to harass peaceful protesters, if he were serious,” one protester remarked.
