Cricket World Cup: Nigeria Reaches Super 6 Despite South Africa Loss

Nigeria’s female U-19 cricket team, who placed second in Group C behind South Africa, advanced to the Super 6 stage of the 2025 ICC U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup.

Although the Junior Female Yellow Greens lost to South Africa by 41 runs (DLS method) on Wednesday, their historic two-run victory over New Zealand on Monday and their point share against Samoa were more than sufficient to secure their place as the second-best team in Group C.

Captain Piety Lucky won the toss and sent the top African team to bat first in the second match between South Africa and Nigeria (in women’s cricket) in the past year.

A rain break reduced the game to eight overs after South Africa, driven by Simone Lourens’ four fours, got off to a strong start in the crease but was eventually stopped by Lucky in the seventh over.
As the South Africans ended the first innings 49 for 2, Lucky carried on where she had left off, dismissing Kayla Reyneke with yet another devious ball.

The nerve-wracking chase in Nigeria didn’t help Sarah Bakhita’s team, who only managed 24 for 8, despite the adrenaline boost.

When the Nigerian squad plays England and Ireland in the Super 6 stage on Saturday, January 25, and Wednesday, January 29, respectively, they will continue to try to make history regardless of the outcome.

After finishing first and third, respectively, in Group B, England and Ireland advanced.

In order to strengthen their group stage performances and advance to the semi-finals, the Junior Female Yellow Greens will need to accumulate all of the points and runs in the upcoming round.
