Lagos Assembly Turmoil: ‘Baba Wants Obasa Back After His Removal’

The extended impasse between former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa and 32 members of the Lagos State House of Assembly may soon be resolved by political intervention.
A source close to both the Assembly and President Bola Tinubu, who spoke on condition of anonymity with BusinessDay, stated that Obasa’s impeachment on January 13, 2025, did not have the President’s sanction.
It was understands that the Lagos Assembly has been mired in a leadership fight following Obasa’s impeachment and the subsequent election of Mojisola Meranda as the first female Speaker of the House.

The situation intensified on Monday when operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police locked the Speaker’s office, leading to protests by legislative personnel.

Speaking on the crisis, the insider claimed, “They treated Baba with disrespect.” He was not taken with them. Baba wants Obasa back because he is upset that he was taken away.

Take a look at what Obasa is causing. There is division throughout the House, among the members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), and in other places. No one is benefiting from this. Additionally, the Department of State Services’ (DSS) invasion of the Assembly was needless. While some members expressed disapproval of the DSS’s participation, the DSS responded that they were welcomed. The truth is unknown.

The source expressed concern that the development would have a negative effect on the Assembly’s and the executive arm’s operations.

“What is occurring could have a detrimental effect on Lagos State’s general government. The House, for example, has adjourned sine die. Will that not have an impact on the executive’s work? No society is ever good when it is in crisis. Development is impacted. Development will be halted in the absence of peace.

“Tinubu is the man who will ultimately find a solution. Ultimately, every member of the House of Assembly is a member of the same political family,” the insider stated.
