The tech giant Meta has issued an apology after one of its auto-translation tools unintentionally declared the passing of Siddaramaiah, the current Karnataka chief minister and an Indian politician.
Following Siddaramaiah’s Kannada-language Instagram post on Tuesday, in which he lamented the death of famous Indian actress B. Saroja Devi, the error occurred.
The auto-translation feature of the platform incorrectly altered the message to imply that Siddaramaiah had passed away.
The faulty English translation claimed that the chief minister had paid respects to the deceased actress after his death.
Following the mistake, Meta said in a statement on Thursday that the translation problem had been fixed.

The business expressed regret for the error and guaranteed that it had been resolved.
“This incorrect Kannada translation was momentarily created by a bug that we have now corrected. An official from Meta expressed regret that this had occurred.
The issue caught the attention of Siddaramaiah’s office, which voiced concerns over Meta’s auto-translation function, particularly for Kannada-language content.
His office characterized the tool’s translations as frequently inaccurate and occasionally extremely deceptive in a letter to the business.
Confusion can result from such mistakes, they cautioned, particularly when they impact public remarks made by public servants.
