Nnamdi Kanu Urges Judiciary: Transfer Case to Southeast or Assign New Judge

Nnamdi Kanu, the jailed leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has requested that his trial be moved to a Federal High Court in the South-East or assigned to a different judge in the event that no other judge in Abuja is ready to preside over the case.

After a standard meeting at the Department of State Services (DSS) facility in Abuja, Kanu’s principal attorney, Aloy Ejimakor, revealed his demand in a statement on Wednesday, January 22.

The action was taken in response to Justice Nyako’s September 24, 2024, recusal from the case, which was based on Kanu’s disagreement with her management of the trial.

But after Justice John Tsoho, the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, referred the case to her, Kanu objected.

Kanu believes that Justice Nyako’s decision to resume the trial compromises the integrity of the legal system, according to Ejimakor. His legal staff has been directed by him to make sure she doesn’t oversee the case.

The planned court date for the continuation of MNK’s lawsuit is the main topic of discussion at today’s visitation.

“Judge Binta Murtala-Nyako withdrew from the case due to the order of recusal entered on September 24, 2024, and Onyendu has directed the legal team to act quickly to ensure that his case is not handled by her,” Ejimakor said.

Because the alleged offenses took place in the South-East, Kanu’s legal team also demanded that the trial be transferred to a court there.

“The Chief Judge has the authority to transfer the case to any Federal High Court in the former Eastern Nigeria, where the alleged offenses were allegedly committed or had an impact, if no other judge in Abuja is willing to take on the case,” the statement continued.
