N20 Million for Dentistry: Peter Obi Shares Reason Behind UNICAL Donation

Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), has disclosed the rationale behind his ₦20 million donation to the University of Calabar School of Dentistry.
He clarified that he gave the money to help kids who were struggling.
Obi complained that while political leaders lived in luxury, the government had disregarded what he called the most fundamental educational demands of pupils.

“The situation at UNICAL is a direct reflection of failed leadership,” the former governor of Anambra State stated while speaking at the Calabar Airport. We can’t let our kids take the brunt of our political mistakes any longer.

“While political office holders spend millions on luxury, young Nigerians who are trying to further their education are not provided with the most basic resources.” It shouldn’t be that way.

The circumstances at the University of Calabar’s Faculty of Dentistry, in Obi’s opinion, represented a clear instance of leadership failure in Nigeria’s educational system. The ₦20 million donation, he explained, was intended to help upgrade the faculty’s vital infrastructure.

“This token will assist in the purchase of 15 more dental chairs, which is a crucial requirement established by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria in order to increase the number of students enrolled in the faculty,” he stated.

He pleaded with the authorities to take into account the predicament of the impacted students, whose academic progress had been seriously hindered by subpar facilities.

Obi stressed that the future of the nation rests on the level of education and empowerment of its people and urged other well-meaning Nigerians and leaders to support organizations like UNICAL.
