Giovanni van Bronckhorst, a former defender for Arsenal, does not think Declan Rice’s first free-kick goal in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League quarterfinal versus Real Madrid is very noteworthy.
Bronckhorst contended that if Real Madrid had arranged their defense correctly, Declan Rice’s free-kick goal would have been prevented.

Bronckhorst mirrored former Real Madrid midfielder Wesley Sneijder’s comments during a discussion on Ziggo Sports, saying that Rice’s goal was rather normal for a right-footed player.
Real Madrid’s wall was positioned incorrectly, as goalie Thibaut Courtois was expecting a free-kick from left-footer Bukayo Saka, as Sneijder noted.
Rice was able to effectively shoot around the wall from an angle that normally should have been well-defended because of this error.
“The wall wasn’t positioned correctly for that first goal,” he clarified. The wall was too far to the right because Courtois thought Saka would take it. It shouldn’t be possible for a right-footed player to shoot around the wall from that position.
Bronckhorst said, “I agree with Wesley,” in support of Sneijder’s view. Rice was able to find a way to score since the wall was too far to the right. For a guy in that position, a shot like that ought to be rather simple.
