They Opened Fire on Us First’ – Police Confirm Killing of Final-Year Student in Benue

Following a gunshot incident in Makurdi, Emmanuella Ahenjir, a young woman, died. The Benue State Police Command has opened an investigation into her death.

In a statement, Benue State Police Command Police Public Relations Officer CSP Anene Sewuese Catherine said the event happened early on Friday, May 16, 2025.

She claims that a patrol team based at Duku Park in Wurukum sent a radio message at around 4:00 a.m., reporting a suspicious interaction.

“On 16/5/2025 at approximately 4:00 a.m., a police team stationed at Duku Park, Wurukum, received a radio message stating that they had stopped a car approaching from the Benue Links area, but the driver turned around, drove through the opposite lane, and fired intermittently at them,” she added. The driver drove off after the cops fired a shot.

Until around ten in the morning this morning, when word broke that Emmanuella Ahenjir, a woman who was a student at Federal University in Wukari, Taraba State, had been shot and killed at Benue State University Teaching Hospital, the police were still pursuing the car.

The investigators were told on the deceased upon their arrival at the hospital, and the body was placed in the morgue for autopsy.

Another passenger in the car, Apase Keghter, was spotted at the hospital and asked to be questioned.

Mr. Apase claimed that they had driven in the opposite lane and passed the checkpoint without stopping, but they did not shoot, after attending club activities at the Newcastle Event Centre.

“They drove to the Welfare Quarters with the victim despite being shot by the police.” A flat tire caused them to stop, and they contacted a commercial vehicle to transport them to the hospital.

At this time, there is no sign of his possessions, the show automobile, or the other people within the aforementioned vehicle.
