Tinubu Administration to Inaugurate Abia Sections of Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway

A significant milestone in the continuous infrastructure development throughout the South-East region will be reached when the Federal Government of Nigeria commissions two crucial sections of the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway in Abia State before the end of 2025.

This declaration was made by Works Minister Dave Umahi while meeting with Governor Alex Otti in Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South LGA, and inspecting federal road developments in Abia.

The minister stated that the Aba to Port Harcourt segment is scheduled for inauguration in November 2025, while the Umuahia-to-Aba stretch, which is being managed by Arab Contractors, is expected to be put into service in December 2025.

Umahi commended Governor Otti for his cooperative style, especially in resolving problems that had previously caused the projects to stagnate, like the clearing of rubbish and traders off important roadways. He called the governor “a man with a golden heart” and a prime example of how collaboration across political divides can spur swift progress.

Citing the Aba–Ikot Ekpene Road, Umuahia–Ikot Ekpene Road, and the recently awarded Afikpo Road as other significant federal projects revolutionizing the region’s transportation system, Umahi underscored the scope of ongoing initiatives.

The minister did, however, recognize the financial difficulties the Bola Tinubu administration had encountered, stating that the government inherited more than 2,600 federal road projects worth ₦13 trillion in 2023, a sum that has now increased to over ₦20 trillion. He urged states to seize control of some federal highways, pointing out that they might toll restored routes to recover their costs even though such initiatives would not be reimbursed.

The South-East is getting a fair amount of infrastructure investments on par with other geographic zones, Umahi said, underscoring the president’s commitment to equitable development. “As South-East residents, regardless of our political affiliations, we have every reason to support this president who is standing with us,” he said.

The minister reaffirmed his commitment to improving Nigeria’s road system by announcing that President Tinubu will soon travel to Abia to officially open finished projects along the Enugu-Port Harcourt route.

Governor Alex Otti thanked the federal government for its support, saying the partnership was essential to the socioeconomic development of the state.
