Tinubu: OPC Warns El-Rufai, Others Against Threatening Nigeria’s Rotational Presidency

The Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC) has accused former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, and other northern political players of scheming to truncate President Bola Tinubu’s tenure.
The organization declared its support for Tinubu’s reelection in 2027 but cautioned against attempts by self-appointed “leaders of the North” to overthrow the President too soon and violate the zoning concept.
Bunmi Fasehun, the group’s general secretary, accused Rufai and other northern political leaders of attempting to shorten the unwritten power rotation agreement between the North and South in a statement released on Monday.
“Those who are now demanding Asiwaju’s early removal should remember that the rotational principle, which the entire nation adopted and which has made government inclusive and equitable since 1999, is important. The self-serving interests of political adventurists like Hameed Baba-Ahmed and Nasir El-Rufai should not jeopardize that principle, Fasehun stated.
Fasehun emphasized that as long as such political actions jeopardize national unity, the OPC’s more than 10 million members and supporters would not keep quiet.

“No one can overshadow the historic contribution Asiwaju made to the North’s regaining of the presidency in 2015 by opposing a Southern president in office. An opposition party won a presidential election for the first time in Nigerian history.
Through the primaries and general elections in 2015 and 2019, Tinubu’s resources, contacts, and stratagem enabled God to accomplish an impossible purpose.
The OPC stated that Tinubu had “clearly mobilized his South-West to vote massively for Buhari in both elections.”
Fasehun also compared Tinubu to the late South African leader Nelson Mandela, describing him as a byproduct of Nigeria’s democratic struggle.
Similar to the OPC and our founder, the late Dr. Frederick Fasehun, Tinubu was a powerful figure in NADECO, the main platform for our nation’s democratic fight, both domestically and internationally. “Like Nelson Mandela, Tinubu is the first Nigerian president to come out of the trenches of the fight against military rule in this Fourth Republic,” he continued.
