South Africa Urges Africa to Leverage Mineral Resources Against Trump

Gwede Mantashe, the minister of mineral resources for South Africa, has urged African countries to strike back against President Donald Trump’s threat of budget cuts.

According to reports, President Trump halted all financing for South Africa because of the country’s Exploration Act.
Mantashe reminded Africa that its natural riches are essential to the prosperity of the United States and the rest of the globe.

This was said by the South African Minister of Mineral Resources on Tuesday in response to Trump’s threat of budget cuts.

The interview was shared on Tuesday by South Africa-based Newzroom Afrika on its X handle.

“With this ongoing threat that, yeah, Trump will withhold funding to South Africa because you passed an exploration act,” he said. And I suggested that we withhold minerals from the United States so as not to paralyze Africa. That’s it.

“Let’s not give them minerals if they don’t give us money.” In actuality, however, they steal our resources while claiming that we are wasting money. No, the continent does contain minerals. Because of this, we have what we have.

“As a continent, we must use that endowment for our own good; we are not mere beggars.” We will collapse with minerals at our doorstep, nevertheless, if we as a continent are terrified and fear everything. I therefore argue that Africa is the richest mining jurisdiction in the world. And as a continent, we need to embrace that problem and make the most of it.
