Ashiru Slams Governor Sani, Says APC’s Failure Over ASUU Strike Is No Accident

Isa Ashiru, a former candidate for governor of Kaduna State from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has called Governor Uba Sani’s All Progressives Congress (APC) administration a failure.
According to reports, the Kaduna State University branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) went on an indefinite strike on Thursday because Governor Sani had not complied with the union’s agreement.
Withheld salary, pension, and non-payment of promotion arrears were among the agreements that Governor Sani’s government broke, according to the notice of strike letter, which was signed by the union’s chairman, Peter Adamu, and secretary, Peter Waziri.

“With effect from today, April 24, 2025, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), KASU branch would like to inform the public that the National Executive Council (NEC) has granted the branch’s congress’s request to resume the suspended indefinite strike action,” it stated. For the record, the following are among the points of contention: 1. Reimbursement of all salary withheld (May through September 2022 and beyond); 2. Earned Academic Allowances (EAA) payments since 2026; 3. Payment of SIWES supervision allowances and promotion arrears; 4. Group life assurance and other benefits to departed members; 5. Pension non-remittance (2009–2019); 6. Establishment of pay awards of 25% and 35%; 7. University autonomy is restored.

“The Kaduna State government’s failure to uphold its commitments and respect the agreement reached by both parties is the reason for the indefinite strike action.”

Ashiru claimed in a statement on Friday that the ASUU strike was a judgment on Sani’s administration. He promised to back ASUU’s industrial action.

“ASUU-KASU’s extended strike is a harsh verdict on the APC-led Kaduna government, not just a labor action. Salary withholding, underpaid pensions, and unfulfilled commitments. Education has been handled with disdain by this dictatorship. Enough is enough.

“Our institutions have been reduced to shadows, our students abandoned, and our lecturers neglected for years.” The failure of APC is systemic, intentional, and shameful; it is not an accident. This isn’t governance. It’s treachery.

Our solidarity with ASUU-KASU is unwavering. The future of Kaduna is at stake in the struggle for high-quality education. He declared, “It is time for citizens to stand up and declare that our children will never again be sacrificed on the altar of incompetence.”
