Lagos Will Operate Round-the-Clock Through Energy Solutions – Commissioner

The state government of Lagos has promised to provide methods to make the city’s economy run around the clock using sustainable and dependable energy.

In order to realize this vision, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources has developed an ambitious plan for universal energy access in the future, enhancing the dependability of electricity and encouraging domestic production of power infrastructure components.

The Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Engr. Biodun Ogunleye, spoke about these strategic objectives during the ongoing Ministerial Press Briefing to mark Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s six years in office.

According to Ogunleye, one of the Ministry’s main projects is the complete implementation of the Lagos Electricity Market structure as outlined in the Lagos State Electricity Law, 2024. This will entail facilitating embedded generation, licensing independent electricity distribution companies, and operationalizing the Lagos Independent System Operator (LISO) in order to stabilize the power ecosystem.

Ogunleye declared, “We are taking intentional steps to transform Lagos into a 24-hour economy through dependable and sustainable energy solutions.”

In addition, he said, the Ministry is aiming to finish and power eight interconnected mini-grids in underprivileged communities, with plans to expand these kinds of interventions throughout rural and riverine regions.

“Investments in infrastructure and long-term energy planning will be guided by the Lagos Integrated Resource Plan, which is presently being developed.”

Also, plans are being finalized to collaborate with both domestic and foreign investors for the local production of power assets such transformers, meters, cables, and switchgear, Engr. Ogunleye revealed.

Ogunleye claims that this will not only improve the energy value chain but also increase industrial capacity, generate jobs, and lessen the State Government’s reliance on imports.

As part of the DARES program, Lagos is also planning to strengthen its partnership with the Rural Electrification Agency and activate the Lagos State Electrification Agency (LSEA), guaranteeing that no community is left behind in the energy transition.

As the Commissioner stated, “Lagos would have effectively established itself as a model for sub-national energy transformation in Africa, utilizing partnerships, technology, and policy to power prosperity when all these plans come to fruition.”
