Vandals Strike Gas Pipeline in Bayelsa

A 24-inch gas pipeline in Bayelsa state’s Southern Ijaw local government area has been broken by vandals.

According to reports, the 24-inch Ogboinbiri/Obiobi gas pipeline runs between the towns of Angiama and Angiamagbene.

In a statement released on Friday, State Commissioner for Information and Orientation Ebiuwou Koku-Obiyai acknowledged the occurrence and called the facility’s destruction “economic sabotage and criminal damage.”

He said the state administration was collaborating with security forces to make sure the culprits were caught.

“The public should be aware that safeguarding national assets is a shared duty, and we implore everyone to exercise caution and notify law enforcement of any questionable activity involving public assets.

“Public asset degradation presents serious environmental risks in addition to costing the federal, state, and local governments money.

“Exposure to petrochemicals and natural gas can pose serious health risks to citizens,” he stated.

Koku-Obiyai advised the state’s youth to cooperate with the government in order to maintain peace and safeguard public infrastructure, rather than giving in to the desire to participate in harmful actions.

He added that by working together, they could accomplish the government’s prosperity plan and build infrastructure that would draw in investment.

The teenagers are tasked by the Commissioner with cooperating to protect their public assets and stop economic sabotage in the future.

According to reports, pipelines in the nation’s Niger Delta region have sustained a number of damages in recent days.

Five days later, the Soku gas pipeline near the Soku-Elok (Abua)-Rumuji-Bonny export terminal in Rivers state was reported to have exploded.
