Kwankwaso, NNPP in Talks to Join Tinubu’s APC or Align with Atiku, El-Rufai

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and Rabiu Kwankwaso, a former Kano State governor, are currently considering their political options. They may choose to join the opposition alliance led by Atiku Abubakar or the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Kwankwaso and the NNPP would not run separately in the 2027 elections, unlike in 2023, according to a trustworthy source who talked to Punch on condition of anonymity.
“Kwankwaso and the NNPP will not run separately, as they did in the 2023 elections,” I can confirm. According to the source, they are considering joining President Tinubu’s APC or siding with the coalition led by Atiku, el-Rufai, and others in light of the current political climate.

As different political parties and actors look for strategic partnerships in front of the upcoming general election, the development takes place in the midst of a quickly changing political landscape.

Ladipo Johnson, the National Publicity Secretary for the NNPP, responded to mounting rumors by confirming in an interview with Punch that the party was in fact taking these strategic choices into consideration.

He said, “Well, let me just say this: because of our own history as the Kwankwasiyya movement, we tend to wait till midterm in the NNPP. This administration’s midterm is set for May 29. Two years have passed, and two more will follow. At that point, we think appropriate politicking will start.

“So, yeah, we are and have been communicating. However, you may remember that I told you at the time that I didn’t want to name the movements, organizations, or individuals that are speaking with us. Now, it is still the case.

“As you may remember, there have been numerous articles in newspapers and online suggesting that Senator Kwankwaso is about to join the APC and that it will happen soon. That’s just the way the game is. For their own selfish motives, some people are promoting or furthering that narrative.

The basic line is that they will start hearing from us very soon. What we are doing will be communicated to our supporters. Essentially, we have three options: we can stay in the NNPP and work with the people who have supported us throughout, we can build a coalition with Atiku and others, or we can join forces with the ruling party. Now, I’m not claiming that any of these are true. However, these are the three main possibilities that could occur.
