Tinubu Meets Lagos Lawmakers, Condemns Obasa’s Impeachment as a Coup

After Hon. Mudasiru Obasa was impeached by 32 of the 40 members of the Lagos State House of Assembly last week, President Bola Tinubu is said to have implicitly approved his removal as Speaker.

The MPs cited highhandedness and corruption as among the alleged violations that led to Obasa’s dismissal.
On Wednesday night, President Tinubu met with members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) and the newly elected Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, in a private meeting in Abuja.

Although Obasa was purportedly in Abuja, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the governor of Lagos State, Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, and the deposed Speaker Obasa were conspicuously absent from the meeting.
Western Post was informed by sources that President Tinubu compared the impeachment process to a coup and voiced his displeasure with the way the MPs carried it out.

But Tinubu grudgingly accepted the Assembly’s judgment after GAC leaders begged him to and acknowledged Obasa’s alleged abuses.

In order to ensure that Lagosians effectively receive the benefits of democracy, Speaker Meranda promised to place a high priority on openness, inclusivity, and sound governance in her leadership.
